Alcatel-Lucent volunteers visit Soronko Foundation

By: Fred Yaw Sarpong

Alcatel-Lucent employees in Ghana volunteered by visiting the Soronko Foundation and spent a day with less privileged children at Mamobi, a suburb of Accra.
The event form part of the Global Days of Caring 2014 initiative.
The team of volunteers and the 30 children had a chance to meet Regina Agyare, a Computer Science graduate from the Ashesi University in Ghana, who is dedicated to empower girls from the slum area through ICT training, with a focus on IP and HTML coding.
The event which was under the theme “You can also make it’ was for the Alcatel-Lucent volunteers to interact with the children by sharing real life experiences, motivate them to identifying their dreams for the future and train the children to set up email accounts and learn the basics of using the Internet.
The volunteers touched on determination and discipline in time management; the importance of having key values such as integrity and trust, along with building life skills in an international setting; and the importance of self-motivation, benefits of research into chosen career fields and having a career development plan as a key guide towards success.
Key personalities which the children were asked to emulate include Madam Christine Lagarde, Marie Curie, Prof. Ewurama Addy and the originator of the Soronko Foundation, Ms. Regina Agyare.
The children were encouraged to emulate the same sense of focus which will help them not only to become successful in any area they venture into, but enable them to potentially go beyond their expectations.
They were advised not to undermine the need for ICT skills as it cuts across multiple professional areas and will provide a broad set of opportunities that comes with a variety of career choices.
Global Days of Caring is the Alcatel-Lucent annual global volunteering initiative. Under the ‘WE CARE’ signature, employees in every region volunteer with the Alcatel-Lucent Foundation various grassroots programs, with Campus in the Cloud, ConnectEd and also organize their own volunteering events.
As part of the same initiative, in 2013 employees organized 34 local initiatives in 23 countries. Volunteering activities ranged from food, clothing, toy and book drives to educational, training and career-orientation workshops.
More than 478 employees gave their time and support, benefiting more than 5,525 people. Alcatel-Lucent had celebrated the results of this year’s campaign and the commitment of its employees on the International Volunteer Day.
