NCA to auction another 4G spectrum

The National Communication Authority
(NCA) says it will soon announce the auction
of another 4G spectrum, part of the 800 MHz
Band to investors.
This will be the second time the regulator
is offering space as part of a 800 MHz Band
after MTN was awarded a lot of 2 x10 MHz
Band.
Even though the regulator is yet to come
out with details and modalities for acquisition
of the spectrum, the Daily Express gathers
that the price will not be as high as the
US$67.5 million paid by MTN to purchase
the first space of lot of 2x10 MHz Band.
Mr. Henry Kanor, the Deputy Director-
General of NCA who gave the hint in Accra
said the authority will open the bid to enable
players such as members of broadband
communication chamber (BBCC) to take
advantage of the offer.
Addressing participants at the maiden
Broadband Ghana Forum 2017, Mr. Kanor
urged industry players to help shape the
sector by allowing competition to prevail
among them.
Mr. Kanor underscored the importance of
broadband services in the country and for
that matter the need for better services.
In his response, Dr, Yaw Akoto, the
Chairman of BBCC told the Daily Express
that currently their interest is not to bid
for any 4G spectrum as announced by the
regulator.
He told the Daily Express that the chamber
is an advocacy lobbying group on behalf
of companies that will like to see the rapid
deployment and expansion of broadband
services in the country.
He mentioned that although a lot of
challenges have been referred to them, they
have not really had the opportunity to either
deal with most of them; hence the second
spectrum is not their focus now.
In late 2015, the National Communications
Authority awarded the first lot of 2 x10 MHz,
part of the 800 MHz Band to the Scancom,
the operators of Mobile Telecommunication
Network (MTN), to provide 4G services to its
customers.
Scancom, the mother company of MTN
together with Surfline, Goldkey and Migson
bided for the spectrum but MTN won the bid
by paying US$67.5 million for the lot of 2x10
spaces from the 800HMz.
