The iSpace Foundation,
a co-working tech and creative hub for startups businesses based in Accra has
nominated two Ghanaian startups companies for international programme.
The two startups companies, CODEF Africa and Moja were selected based on applications they have develop to address health issues associated with Ghanaians.
CODEF Africa develops
an application called Mind Aide, a mental health application which brings
together mental health service providers and other mental health services.
Emmanuel Mbalam, the
Lead Project Director said basically Mind Aide application brings doctors and
who need mental services together.
“People who need the
services can book consultation with these special doctors through the App and
they will be taken care of,” he added.
“What the App can also
do is that there are some cases which do not need face-to-face consultation
with doctors, so doctors can actually give advises on the platform,” he stated.
Mbalam said as part of
the functionalities of the application people can upload their prescription and
get directed to where they can get those drugs and also know the prices as
well.
“Our main focus is on
mental health and as part of that we initiated talks and a series of seminars
that focus on educating people on mental health,” he explained.
“We did introduce this
application after we realized that most Ghanaians are ignorant about mental
health and also does not care about what mental health play in their lives. We
thought it wise to make people aware of mental health and the role it plays in
their lives,” Mbalam said.
CODEF Africa develops
Mind Aide application in April 2016 and will be officially launch later in the
month.
CODEF Africa, an NGO
educating people and creating awareness of mental health and maternal health.
Jonathan Lawel of Moja
Project said the application helps the National Blood Bank with blood donors to
donate blood.
“The reason why we
came up with this idea was that we realized that current statistics (2014) says
that 250,000 units of blood required to be collected by the National Blood
Service. But only 63,500 were collected and this shows that there is deficit
when it comes to blood donation in the country,” Lawel told Daily Express.
He mentioned that the
application also keeps all blood donators on record. “What is important is that
they becoming regular blood donation customers. We realized that the service do
not have such record and sometimes difficult to identify the donors,” he added.
Lawel said the
application also offers the donors the avenue to book appointments and donates
blood at their own convenient time. “It also helps the donor to be able to
locate the closes blood donation center,’ he mentioned.
Lawel said people who
needs blood can also go to the application, search the blood type they need and
locate the donor who can come and donate to them. “The blood donors also have
time table of National Blood Service which they can assess.”
The Moja application
also has daily health information which will help the donors what they need to
do before donating the blood. “We want the donors to be healthy,” he noted.
Alison
Roadburg, the Director at iSpace Foundation told Daily Express that CODEF
Africa and Moja will represent Ghana at the Mobile, Young,
Opportunity, Unity, Technology, Help (mYouth) programme in Macedonia next month.
She said the mYouth
provide capacity building which will help the participants to provide and
develop innovative actions that will enable young people to gain high skills
for development of mobile applications that solve local issues of education and
provide employment.
