Tigo donates 540 tablet phones Death and Birth Registry

Tigo Ghana has presented 540 tablets phones with internet connectivity to the Births and Deaths Registry (BDR) for the pilot phase of the automated birth registration programme.

This form parts of Tigo’s strategic focus to accelerate birth registration in Ghana through mobile technology. Tigo in partnership with UNICEF is providing this technology platform.

A statement from Tigo stated that the tablets will allow birth registration attendants from the Births and Deaths Registry to electronically capture details of all new births in 300 communities across Ghana.

The automated birth registration programme which was launched in May this year, is expected to make a significant contribution to an improved national average registration rate, an increase from 65 percent of all children under age one to at least 75 percent by the end of 2017.

According to Tigo, a successful pilot will also contribute to progress under Ghana’s National Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Strategic Plan 2016-2020, which aims at reaching 100 percent of children by end of 2020.

“Based on experience in other countries like Tanzania and Uganda, Tigo Ghana partnered with UNICEF Ghana in developing the new automated birth registration system,” the statement added.

It added that “the outcomes for the children are clear. It will eliminate the lengthy and ineffective manual birth registration procedures.” 

The initiators said through mobile technology, the new registration process marks a significant shift in accelerating birth registration in Ghana, while monitoring and tracking the performance of field agents in real-time.

“For Tigo, the investment in the automated birth registration system forms part of its broader digital lifestyle agenda which focuses on constant connectivity to work, create and share in a joined up way,” said the network company.

UNICEF on the other hand remains committed to the welfare and wellbeing of children. An automated birth registration system will establish a strong foundation to build a new generation with official legal identity documents.

The automated birth registration system is the first of its kind in Ghana. The launch of the BDR/TIGO/Ghana partnership on the 4th of May 2016 signifies the commitment by all partners to continue working together to bring the new system to scale and to sustain initial results.

Shortage of weighing cards hit major hospitals in Accra

ABL launches chibuku super in Bolgatanga

Mr. Thomas Nii Ponku, Supervisor in charge of Chibuku Super at ABL told Daily Express that the management decided to launch the Chibuku Super drink in the Upper East region because they’ve realized it is similar to a traditional drink in the region. “Chibuku is like a well developed pito, a traditional drink made from fermented millet or sorghum in the Northern part of Ghana. So the idea is to provide them with similar drink,” he added.
