Agro input dealers in Techiman undergo technical training

By: Mathias Amoah

About 50 retailers of agro products within the Techiman municipality benefited from a technical training organised by Yara Ghana in collaboration with Northgate Agro, a major distributor of Yara products in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana.

The training took the participants through the different Yara crop nutrition solutions, the right fertilization programmes for different crops and the application processes that will ensure safe usage of products to ensure maximum benefits.

They were also educated on how to identify nutrient deficiency in crops and to know which crop nutrition product to recommend.

The aim of the training was to provide the relevant technical knowledge on the Yara products to the retailers so they in turn will impart the acquired knowledge to the farmers whom they are in direct contact with on a day to day basis so the farmers will derive maximum benefits from using the products.

The Tropical Crop Segment Manager for Yara Ghana, Mr.Theophilus Djorbuah expressed satisfaction with the training and advised the retailers to share the information they had acquired with the farmers who come and buy from them.

He also cautioned against the habit of some farmers and retailers who Ë® tasteË® fertilizer and other agro chemicals to check their Ë®potencyË®. Ë® This can have serious repercussions for one’s health either now or in the futureË® he emphasised.

A retailer from Nkenkenso Mr. Andy Boakye Boateng acknowledged that it has been common practice to proffer any alternative fertilizer to the farmers without taking into account which crop it is or its nutritional need. Ë® So we receive complains from farmers that sometimes they dont get the results they expected from using one product or another. Ë® He expressed optimism that with this training, Ë® we can now advise farmers on which product to buy for which crop and even at what stage to apply them .Ë®

Madam Elizabeth Dwamena, the Managing Director of Northgate Agro Company Limited also advised those who were farmers to apply what they had learned on their farms which they can use as model farms for the farmers who come to buy agro products from them.

The participants were also taken through results from trials that Yara has conducted with some research institutions such as Crop Research Institute(CRI) and the Savannah Agriculture Research Institute(SARI).
