Broadband Communications Chamber (BCC), the umbrella body of
broadband service providers in the country that provide broadband services says
it planning to bring on board other companies whose operations fall in line
with the chamber’s activities.
Speaking to the Daily Express, Dr. Yaw Akoto, the acting
Chairman of the Chamber, he mentioned the group is made up of only three
entities; however there are companies that need to be part of the chamber to
fight for one common goal.
According to him, it’s important to bring on board other
industry players who are also offering services like the members of the
chamber. He said this when the executive of the Network of Communication
Reporters (NCR) called on the chamber in Accra. The meeting was to allow the
NCR foster relationship towards building a successful telecommunication
industry in Ghana.
The chamber is made up of three indigenous companies namely Biu
Telecommunications Limited, Broadband Home Limited, MainOne Cable and Surfline
Communications Limited. These companies are authorised to provide broadband
connectivity through fixed and mobile services.
Dr. Akoto disclosed that the chamber is trying to bring on
board Google, Nokia, Huawei, ZTE and K-Net. “We are also targeting Ericsson,
Dolphin, Gilat, Glo, Teledata, Comsys,” he added.
He stated that the main idea is to bring these institutions
under one umbrella like what the telecom chamber.
“All these institutions one way or the other provides
internet services to Ghanaians. Coming together to form a formidable group will
improve our service delivery to the public,’ he added.
“It has not been easy with this membership drive. But once
it’s the chamber objective to pull them together, we will surely get there.”
He also indicated that one of the ideas is to help the
members of the chamber have affordable internet from their suppliers, so that
customers will also have cheap internet services. “That’s some of the reasons
why we want to bring all these bodies together,” he noted
Dr. Akoto said the chamber is planning to liaise with
National Information Telecommunication Agency (NITA), Kofi Annan ICT Centre of
Excellence, Alliance for Affordable Internet and the UN Broadband Commission
for capacity building.
The chamber’s objective is to create a private business
organization researching and advising on broadband use, policy and regulation
for national development. Currently, there are about 300,000 broadband users in
Ghana.
