Journalists train on Geospatial Science and Technology


A group of selected journalists have attended first workshop on Geospatial Science and Technology aimed at educating journalists on the use of geo-spatial in the newsroom.
About 15 journalists selected from various media houses participated in the programme. The Journalists were drawn from print, online, radio and television.
The workshop was to educate journalists on the use of Geo-spatial Information in the newsroom by focusing on topics such as Introduction to Concepts of Geospatial Technologies, Case Studies of GIS Applications in Ghana with special emphasis on how to increase quality and quantity of Geo-Information System stories in Ghana's media.

The workshop was held a day before the 7th Annual African Conference and Exhibition on Geospatial Information, Technology and Applications.

The workshop was organised by the African Media Forum for Geo-information Systems (AMFGIS) in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the International Institute of ICT Journalism (Penplusbytes).

The theme for the workshop is “Harnessing Geospatial Science and Technology for Socio-economic Development –The Role of Ghanaian Media”, focused on topics such as Introduction to Concepts of Geospatial Technologies, Case Studies of GIS Applications in Ghana with special emphasis on how to increase quality and quantity of Geo-Information System stories in Ghana's media.
Kwami Ahiabenu, Co-Chair of AMFGIS, said “the workshop comes at the right time when Ghanaian journalists are grappling with data journalism and trying to make meaning of it and it sought to enhance the capacity of journalists in Ghana and offered them better ways of reporting on Ghana’s extractive sector”.
He said ‘the workshop was to simplify reports and make it easy for their target audience to understand complex issues and appraise journalists on emerging Geospatial Technologies and Applications.”
AMFGIS is under the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) which seeks to promote collaboration, information and knowledge sharing on geospatial information, science and technology issues and the impact on the country's socio-economic development.
ECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development.

Shortage of weighing cards hit major hospitals in Accra

Checks by this paper revealed that while some of the hospitals have being encountering the shortage for about a year now, others started experiencing it six months ago. In place of the Child Health Record Book (weighing card), the nursing mothers are given a single card on which information of children are recorded on it. Those hospitals identified are the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Korle Bu Polyclinic, Kaneshie Polyclinic, Adabraka Polyclinic and the Ridge Hospital. ABL launches chibuku super in Bolgatanga

Mr. Thomas Nii Ponku, Supervisor in charge of Chibuku Super at ABL told Daily Express that the management decided to launch the Chibuku Super drink in the Upper East region because they’ve realized it is similar to a traditional drink in the region. “Chibuku is like a well developed pito, a traditional drink made from fermented millet or sorghum in the Northern part of Ghana. So the idea is to provide them with similar drink,” he added.
